Hackathon (18th - 20th May) FAQs

What is a Hackathon? How does it work?

Hackathon is an event where people with diverse skills, interests and perspectives collaborate to solve problems using technology. Participants usually form groups of 2 - 6 individuals, identify problems and generate solutions to a fleshed out concept, mock-up or prototyping stage.

Hack Tairāwhiti is a 48 hour Hackathon on the 18th - 20th of May 2018 that will bring a collection of New Zealand exporters and the country's top tech talent together in Gisborne. With the objective of unlocking the region's potential to support entrepreneurs across NZ.

Who can apply? 

You don’t have to be a ‘hacker’, a programmer or a tech-lover to take part - all skill-sets are valuable!

An ideal team has a mixture of skills (developers, designers, marketers, researchers).

What if I'm new to this?

No worries! We have experienced mentors to assist you and your team. Come and have fun!

What if I don't have an idea or a team?

No problem! Teams are formed in the early stages of the weekend.

What should I bring?

Yourself! A laptop and any other working equipment / electronics you’d like to have on hand. We’ll provide meals, workspace, and plenty of snacks, drinks, post-it notes, pens and the like.

Who owns the intellectual property generated?

Any pre-existing intellectual property rights remain the property of their current owner.  Any new intellectual property rights which are created during the Hackathon will be jointly owned by the Hackathon participant(s) who created them.  It is your responsibility to protect your intellectual property rights and New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE) will not be involved in, and has no liability in respect of, any disputes regarding ownership of intellectual property between Hackathon participants.

Are there prizes?

Yes! But details will be announced soon.

How many people can be on my team?

We would recommend a team size of no more than 10, as it may become difficult to stay connected and work cohesively with more than this. An ideal team size would be 7 - 8 people, with a mix of skills (developers, designers, marketers, researchers and at least one person who loves pitching to a crowd). In our experience, the more diverse your team (in every aspect), the stronger your end solution.

We have capacity for a maximum of 15 teams, and - to keep things fair - no one can begin work until we are organised into 15 or less teams.

What data, APIs, resources & tech will I have access to?

Am I allowed to bring pre-prepared code or technology?

You are allowed to use existing technology, including third party libraries, frameworks or your own pre-built code.

You will need to declare any code or technology you bring with you that is incorporated into your submission, including a description of its scope and functionality. Please note that the "Execution" criteria is assessed based on the work you produce during the weekend and not what you brought in. For example, bringing a complete codebase/project without further modification will not contribute towards the Execution criteria of your submission.

It's my first pōwhiri. What can I expect?

If this is your first pōwhiri, we would recommend that you read through the pōwhiri guide that we've created.

What about accommodation?

Participants and mentors have the option of staying at one of the local maraes.

Alternatively, we've compiled a list of motels, hotels and holiday parks close to the venue here.

How does the Marae stay work?

Marae stay for Friday and Saturday nights are provided for participants and mentors. Specific details will be announced soon.

When should I show up and when should I leave?

The hackathon will start Friday afternoon and finish Sunday afternoon. Detailed schedules will be announced soon. 

What is the selection process?

As spaces are limited, registration will be on a first come first serve basis. To register, fill out the form here and express your interest. Registration confirmations will be sent out via email.
